Illinois State Senator, Karina Villa celebrates a year in office serving the citizens of the 25th district. The following information was shared by Villa’s office as she looks back on the past year in office.
Karina Villa is a Democratic Illinois state senator for the 25th District. The 25th district is located in the Chicago metropolitan area, and it includes all or parts of Aurora, North Aurora, Batavia, West Chicago, South Elgin, Wayne, and Bartlett. Villa is the Chair of the Senate Public Health Committee and was previously a member of the Illinois House of Representatives. Before her election to the Illinois House of Representatives, she was a member of the West Chicago District 33 Board of Education. Villa defeated DuPage County Board member Tonia Khouri in the 2018 general election to succeed retiring incumbent Republican, former West Chicago mayor Mike Fortner in the Illinois House of Representatives for District 49. In 2020, incumbent State Senator Jim Oberweis announced that he was vacating his seat to run for the Republican nomination to challenge Lauren Underwood in the 2020 election for Illinois’s 14th congressional district. Villa chose to run for the open seat and defeated Republican candidate Jeanette Ward. Villa was succeeded by fellow Democrat Maura Hirschauer.
In 2022, Villa was reelected to the Senate in a redrawn 25th district that included far more of central Aurora and left out St. Charles, Oswego, and Yorkville. She defeated Republican Heather Brown. During the campaign, Villa maintained her support for the SAFE-T Act, which Brown opposed, and campaigned alongside Governor J. B. Pritzker, U.S. Representative-elect Delia Ramirez, and state Representative Maura Hirschauer.
Over the past year, as a senator, her office hosted 21 events across the district to provide information and resources to constituents. Through these events, they were able to connect constituents to mental health resources and DMV services, assistance with Medicare and Medicaid, and information on property taxes as well as workers’ rights. Villa noted that “it was great to connect with constituents in all areas of the 25th district during the past year. ”
Community Tours: Senator Villa’s office went on 116 tours this year to listen to the needs of businesses, trade industries, and social service organizations in the district, and highlight their services with constituents. Villa commented,
“it has been great to learn more about the services local health departments and healthcare facilities provide to support behavioral health and respiratory health needs as well as the ways they help uninsured and underinsured residents stay healthy. It was great to visit small businesses and trade industries that give back to our community and make or supply cool products such as La Garrafa in Aurora and Vulcan Materials in Bartlett.”
Legislation: As a Senator, passing legislation is an instrumental step in advocating for change for constituents. This year Senator Villa was able to pass 23 bills & resolutions which resulted in 18 new laws. Constituent Casework: The dedicated Community Service Directors and interns on her team have served over 3o0 constituents this year by connecting people to resources, assisting with state agency issues, and advocating for policy change to represent the needs of constituents. In April they opened a second district office in Aurora to be accessible to all constituents in the 25th District and through this new location they’ve been able to serve constituents from Cook, Kane, and DuPage counties.

Advisory Committees
This year Villa’s office hosted over 40 advisory committee meetings this year thanks to their co-chairs. Her office
has 4 advisory committees: Mental Health, Seniors, Environmental Justice, and Education. Villa describes the advisory committees as “open to all constituents and are a way for us to hear from our constituents about what is
happening in the 25th District and discuss solutions. Our advisory committees help inform our policy agenda and
the events we host each year. ”
Awards: This year Villa received 6 awards from various legislative and community partners. About the awards, Villa stated, “I am honored to receive awards for my work to prevent substance use disorder, ensure youth in juvenile justice facilities receive protections, my commitment to economic and racial equity and my support for domestic violence services. ”
The senator also received the esteemed John Howard Association Award, Live 4 Lali, Illinois Hunger Coalition and Mutual Ground awards. “One of the greatest honors of my life was receiving the baton of command from the leaders of the Purepecha community in Chilchota this year to strengthen the support for the Purepecha community in the United States and Mexico.”

Legislación: Como senador, aprobar legislación es un paso fundamental para abogar por el cambio para los electores. Premios: Este año Villa recibió 6 premios de varios socios legislativos y comunitarios. Acerca de los premios, Villa declaró: “Me siento honrado de recibir premios por mi trabajo para prevenir el trastorno por uso de sustancias, garantizar que los jóvenes en centros de justicia juvenil reciban protección, mi compromiso con la equidad económica y racial y mi apoyo a los servicios de violencia doméstica”.
