Do you fondly remember the old library? Thank you to the former resident who shared their memories about going to the old library in the 1960s and getting cozy with a good book, laying on the floor and reading the day away.
The first dedicated library building in West Chicago was built in 1953, opening to the public at 332 E. Washington Street in February of 1954 with 8,200 volumes. Ruth Macek was the librarian. 500 people attend the grand opening where Mayor Walter Fawell and State Senator Lottie Holman O’Neill of Downers Grove spoke.
The West Chicago History Museum shared a post recently inviting residents to share their memories of the old West Chicago Public Library. Some information about the library: In 1958, a second wing was added to the building at 332 E. Washington Street. This building served as the West Chicago library until the existing West Chicago Public Library District building opened at 118 W. Washington Street in 1992.
The former library on E. Washington Street is now a private residence.
