This week, the West Chicago Police Department marked a special milestone—the third birthday of Kane, the Department’s second K9 and beloved comfort service dog. Kane’s addition to the force has been instrumental in fostering community connections and promoting safety, compassion, and outreach.
Unlike his K9 counterpart, Mondo, who is trained for protection and apprehension, Kane was specifically selected and trained to serve as a community-focused comfort dog. His training intentionally excludes bite or apprehension techniques, ensuring he is well-suited to interact safely with civilians at public events, presentations, and school visits. Kane’s role is a unique and vital one, often providing a sense of calm and support during challenging situations and bringing smiles to residents young and old.
Kane is handled by Officer Rick Sauseda, a 17-year veteran of the Department with over a decade of experience as a Field Training Officer. Officer Sauseda was instrumental in revitalizing the K9 program, authoring the proposal that led to the acquisition of both Kane and Mondo. Together, Kane and Officer Sauseda underwent specialized training at the Kane County Sheriff’s Office in June 2023, joining the Department’s Targeted Response Unit upon completion.
The Targeted Response Unit (TRU) is a proactive team addressing community concerns such as speeding, drug activity, and gang complaints, while also engaging with residents on quality-of-life issues. Kane has become an integral part of the Unit’s outreach, helping to strengthen bonds between law enforcement and the community.
Keeping Kane safe is a top priority for the West Chicago Police Department, and thanks to the generosity of the Carbonara Family and DuPage Cremations and Memorial Chapel, his squad car is now equipped with a state-of-the-art alarm and safety system. This thoughtful donation, made in February 2024, ensures Kane is always protected, even when he’s in the car. You can read more about this innovative alarm system here.
Kane also received a bulletproof vest from Protecting K9 Heroes, giving him an extra layer of protection while on duty. These generous contributions reflect the deep care and support our community has for its K9 officers, ensuring Kane can continue his important work safely and comfortably.
The West Chicago Police Department takes great pride in having Kane as a valued member of its team. Together with Officer Sauseda’s expertise, Kane’s presence continues to strengthen public safety efforts and build meaningful connections throughout the community.
Happy third birthday, Kane! Thank you for your dedication to bringing comfort, joy, and security to West Chicago. Here’s to many more years of service and celebration.
