County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced today that Judge Brian Telander has sentenced Francisco Alvarado, 25 (d.o.b. 10/13/1999) formerly of West Chicago to forty years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) for his role in the 2018 murder of Luis Guerrero, 18, of West Chicago. The State had asked for a sentence of sixty-five in the IDOC. On November 9, 2022, in exchange for his cooperation, Alvarado entered a plea of guilty to one count of First-Degree Murder and one count of Aggravated Kidnapping (Class X Felony). Alvarado is the last of four individuals charged in the murder to be sentenced. On February 4, 2025, Judge Telander sentenced co-defendant Tia Brewer, 23, formerly of Wheaton, to forty years in the IDOC after Brewer had previously entered a plea of guilty to the same charges as Alvarado. Co-defendants Jesus Jurado-Correa, 25 and Saul Ruiz, 24, both formerly of West Chicago, each entered a plea of guilty to one count of Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder, a Class1 Felony, and in exchange for their cooperation, were sentenced to fifteen years in the IDOC and ten years in the IDOC respectively.
On August 14, 2018, at approximately 11:30 a.m., while conducting a nearby training exercise, personnel with the West Chicago Fire Department observed a smoldering object in a fire pit located at 1325 Joliet Street. Upon inspection of the object, fire personnel discovered the object to be a human body, later identified as Guerrero. Fire personnel immediately contacted the West Chicago Police Department who began an investigation into the matter with the assistance of the Major Crimes Task Force. The investigation quickly led authorities to Alvarado, Brewer, Correa, and Ruiz. The investigation found that all four defendants had planned the murder of Guerrero for approximately one month and that in the early morning hours of August 14, Brewer arranged to meet Guerrero at the West Chicago Public Library. At the library, Alvarado ambushed Guerrero from behind and strangled him with a belt around his neck. Alvarado and Brewer then began stabbing and punching Guerrero. After stealing Guerrero’s backpack, Alvarado and Brewer loaded him into their Jeep Cherokee, traveled to the location on Joliet Street and removed Guerrero from the Jeep. They stabbed and beat Guerrero as he begged to be taken to a hospital. The investigation further found that Correa arrived at the fire pit with a container of gasoline after Guerrero was unconscious. Correa gave the container of gasoline to Alvarado and Brewer who then poured the gasoline onto Guerrero and then lit him on fire. While on fire, Guerrero got up and began to run away at which time Alvarado and Brewer stabbed and beat him. Alvarado and Brewer dragged Guerrero back to the fire pit, threw Guerrero into the pit and lit him on fire again.
“Seven years ago, Mr. Alvarado, along with his three defendants, savagely strangled, beat, stabbed and lit Luis Guerrero on fire,” Berlin said. “With thirty-seven years as a prosecutor under my belt, I had always thought I had seen the worst of the worst. On August 18, 2018, however, I was proven wrong. The unconscionable level of depravity exhibited by Mr. Alvarado and his co-defendants, as they murdered an innocent young man, is unimaginable. With today’s sentencing, the final chapter in the prosecution of those responsible for the gruesome murder of Luis is now complete. While those who loved Luis are left with the void of his absence, I wish them peace through strength and as they continue their lives with just his memory to see them through. I thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Demetri Demopoulos, Amanda Meindl and Kathleen Rowe for their outstanding efforts on this extremely disturbing case.”
Judge Telander sentenced Alvarado to thirty-four years in the IDOC on the murder charge to be served at 100% and six years in the IDOC on Aggravated Kidnapping charge to be served at 85%. The sentences will be served consecutively.
El Fiscal del Condado, Robert Berlin, anunció hoy que el juez Brian Telander condenó a Francisco Alvarado, de 25 años (f.n. 13/10/1999), exresidente de West Chicago, a cuarenta años en el Departamento de Correcciones de Illinois (IDOC, por sus siglas en inglés) por su participación en el asesinato en 2018 de Luis Guerrero, de 18 años, también de West Chicago. La Fiscalía había solicitado una condena de sesenta y cinco años en el IDOC. El 9 de noviembre de 2022, a cambio de su cooperación, Alvarado se declaró culpable de un cargo de Asesinato en Primer Grado y un cargo de Secuestro Agravado (Delito de Clase X). Alvarado es el último de los cuatro acusados por el asesinato en ser sentenciado. El 4 de febrero de 2025, el juez Telander condenó a la coacusada Tia Brewer, de 23 años, exresidente de Wheaton, a cuarenta años en el IDOC, después de que Brewer se declarara culpable de los mismos cargos que Alvarado. Los coacusados Jesús Jurado-Correa, de 25 años, y Saúl Ruiz, de 24 años, ambos exresidentes de West Chicago, se declararon culpables de un cargo de Conspiración para Cometer Asesinato en Primer Grado, un delito de Clase 1, y a cambio de su cooperación fueron sentenciados a quince años en el IDOC y diez años en el IDOC, respectivamente.
El 14 de agosto de 2018, aproximadamente a las 11:30 a.m., mientras realizaban un ejercicio de entrenamiento cercano, personal del Departamento de Bomberos de West Chicago observó un objeto humeante en una fogata ubicada en 1325 Joliet Street. Al inspeccionarlo, descubrieron que se trataba de un cuerpo humano, que más tarde fue identificado como Guerrero. El personal de bomberos contactó de inmediato al Departamento de Policía de West Chicago, que inició una investigación con la asistencia del Grupo de Trabajo de Crímenes Mayores. La investigación rápidamente condujo a las autoridades hacia Alvarado, Brewer, Correa y Ruiz. Mientras ardía, Guerrero se levantó y trató de huir, momento en el cual Alvarado y Brewer lo apuñalaron y golpearon nuevamente. Luego lo arrastraron de regreso a la fogata, lo arrojaron dentro y lo incendiaron por segunda vez.
“Hace siete años, el Sr. Alvarado, junto con sus tres coacusados, estrangularon salvajemente, golpearon, apuñalaron y prendieron fuego a Luis Guerrero”, declaró Berlin. “Con treinta y siete años como fiscal, siempre pensé que ya había visto lo peor de lo peor. Sin embargo, el 18 de agosto de 2018, me equivoqué. El nivel inconcebible de depravación exhibido por el Sr. Alvarado y sus coacusados, al asesinar a un joven inocente, es inimaginable. Con la sentencia de hoy, se cierra el capítulo final en el proceso contra los responsables del atroz asesinato de Luis. Aunque quienes amaban a Luis quedan con el vacío de su ausencia, les deseo paz y fortaleza al continuar sus vidas con solo su memoria para sostenerlos. El juez Telander condenó a Alvarado a treinta y cuatro años en el IDOC por el cargo de asesinato, a cumplirse al 100%, y seis años en el IDOC por el cargo de secuestro agravado, a cumplirse al 85%. Las sentencias se cumplirán de manera consecutiva.
