The march, organized by Casa DuPage in collaboration with local advocates and members of the West Chicago Angels, aimed to highlight unity, resilience, and the right to community safety without fear.
Speakers urged participants to stand together in the face of what they described as intimidation and unjust treatment. “This is the people’s time,” one organizer declared. “When tyranny becomes law, resistance becomes duty. We must stay united, stay in the fight, and we will win together.”
Throughout the morning, protestors held signs calling for justice and compassion, many carrying whistles — a symbol of community defense — and distributing “Know Your Rights” flyers in English and Spanish. Members of the West Chicago Angels, a volunteer patrol group, were also present, recognized for their continued efforts to safeguard local schools, churches, and gathering places.
Among those attending were Alderman Sergio Santiago and his wife, who joined community members in showing support for a peaceful demonstration and unity among residents.
Community members praised the young volunteers who have taken leadership roles in recent weeks. “I am incredibly proud of these young people,” said one organizer. “They could have looked the other way, but instead they chose to defend their neighbors. This is what real community looks like.”
Earlier in the day, two individuals were detained and later released at the Thornton’s gas station near Route 59 and Route 38. Witnesses told The West Chicago Voice that tear gas was used during the incident, though official confirmation has not yet been provided. Authorities have not released additional details, and it remains unclear whether the individuals involved are West Chicago residents or were passing through the area.
There was a very heavy police presence at City Hall throughout the demonstration to help ensure the event remained peaceful and to manage traffic around the busy downtown area. Officers could be seen monitoring intersections, directing vehicles, and standing near crosswalks as participants marched.
Organizers said the broader effort is only beginning. “It doesn’t end here,” one advocate said. “We are the voice for those who don’t have one — and we’re not giving up!
