The Red Grange Award was a traveling trophy that debuted in 1974, and is dedicated annually to the DuPage County high school football players “who best demonstrate a combination of athletic skill, sportsmanship, and scholastic ability.” The Red Grange Award has grown and changed since its 1974 inception, progressing from a Wheaton Warrenville Unit 200 football player-only award winner to allowing players from across the entire DuPage County area high schools.

Muci’s receipt of this award is a testament to his exceptional skills and remarkable contributions to the game of football. The Red Grange All County Banquet, where Muci and other accomplished athletes and coaches [including kicker/punter Ethan Head from Wheaton Academy in West Chicago] will be celebrated, is scheduled to take place on November 15th at the DoubleTree Inn located in Lisle.

West Chicago head football coach, Adam Chavez said,

“Vincent was recognized as one of the best players in Dupage County. In my opinion, he is the best running back in Dupage County. Vincent, in his career at WeGo amassed over 2,200 yards rushing and over 30 TDs. He will go down as one of the best players in WeGo Football history. I tweeted this out a couple of days ago but he is one of the best players/leaders I have come across.”

Coach Chavez will be in attendance at the banquet with Muci. Red Grange also known as “the galloping ghost” grew up in DuPage County. He went on to play college football for the Illinois Fighting Illini, Grange was a three-time consensus All-American and led his team to a national championship in 1923. He was the only unanimous All-American selection in 1924, making him the first player in college football history to receive that honor. In 2008, Grange was named the best college football player of all time by ESPN, and in 2011, he was named the Greatest Big Ten Icon by the Big Ten Network.

Shortly after his final college game in 1925, Grange joined the Bears and the NFL, embarking on a barnstorming tour to raise the league’s attention across the country. When his rookie contract expired, he and agent C. C. Pyle formed the American Football League in 1926, with Grange playing for the Yankees. The league lasted just one year before shutting down and the Yankees were assimilated into the NFL. Grange suffered a serious knee injury in 1927 that prevented him from playing the following season, and he returned to the Bears in 1929. He remained with the team until he ended his playing career in 1934, from which he became a backfield coach for the Bears for three seasons.

He was a very modest person, who insisted that even the ordinary plumber or electrician knows more about his craft than he does. He said he could not explain how he did what he did on the field of play, and that he just followed his instincts
