Michael Freund, 49, of Aurora, has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Dexter Perkins at Rosie O’Reilly’s Bar last week. Despite his plea for release prior to trial, He was denied pre-trial release by the presiding DuPage County Judge in court.
Prosecutors from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office have recently disclosed additional information regarding the tragic events that unfolded at the Wheaton bar shortly before the Christmas weekend . This new insight sheds light on the moments leading up to the fatal shooting.
The incident took place on Friday at approximately 8:45 a.m. at the well-known establishment situated at 0N131 Gary Ave. The bar’s owner has revealed that the dispute, which escalated and ended with a devastating result, originated from a disagreement over leftover pizza. The victim, who was a beloved regular at the bar, allegedly found himself at odds with three individuals who were visiting the establishment for the first time.
By providing these new details, prosecutors aim to provide a clearer understanding of the series of events that led to this heartbreaking incident.
Prosecutors said a disagreement over the bar tab and leftover pizza resulted in a brief scuffle which then overflowed to the outside front deck of the bar between Perkins, Freund and another man, which ultimately resulted in Freund allegedly pulling out a 9 mm Glock handgun from his jacket pocket and firing two warning shots into the air.
A video captured by a bystander and reviewed by editors the West Chicago Voice portrayed a disturbing altercation between an unidentified man and Perkins. Interestingly, Perkins attempted to diffuse the tense situation by engaging in a silly dance with the man, creating a surreal contrast when considering the tragic outcome that followed. Throughout the video, Freund is observed with his hand concealed in his jacket pocket, suggesting the presence of a firearm. Moments later, Freund moves towards the deck’s ramp and fires two shots into the air. should be noted that there might be additional footage available, although the section we have seen is the only portion released by law enforcement authorities to the public. Informally, a reliable source from DuPage County divulged what occurred subsequently, which regrettably led to Perkins’ demise. He was shot multiple times, including in the head, torso, and face.
