GENEVA, Ill.– Residents of West Chicago and the surrounding areas are invited to explore a unique piece of history on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024, at Good Templar Park in Geneva. The event offers a rare opportunity to visit the world-famous 1893 Columbian Exposition Viking Ship, with doors open from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
This 78-foot-long Viking ship, a full-scale replica of an original vessel from 1,000 years ago, was hand-built in Norway in 1893. It gained international acclaim when it was sailed non-stop across the North Atlantic by a crew of 12, becoming one of the star attractions at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. The ship’s fascinating history, along with insights into ancient Viking shipbuilding techniques, will be shared by knowledgeable docents during the event.
Tours of the Viking ship will begin every 15 minutes, and no reservations are required. Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for teens aged 13-17, and free for children 12 and under. While waiting for their tour, visitors can explore hands-on collections of Viking-style clothing, jewelry, tools, and weapons, offering fun and educational experiences for the entire family.
As a special feature of this event, the Energy City Kubb Club will be offering free lessons and demonstrations of the traditional Scandinavian target game “KUBB” from noon to 2 p.m. It’s an exciting opportunity to learn and participate in this historic game.
Visitors should note that the ship is housed in a facility with a gravel floor, and there are no flush toilets on-site.
