Severe Cold Brings Water Main Breaks, Internet Outages, and Warming Center Activations Across West Chicago and Suburbs
The extreme cold gripping the Chicago area this week has caused significant disruptions, including water main breaks, internet outages, and dangerously low temperatures. In response, several local warming centers have been activated to provide residents with relief from the bitter cold.

Impact on Residents
Several suburbs, including West Chicago, dispatched crews to repair water main breaks caused by the freezing temperatures. Meanwhile, more than 70 homes in West Chicago remain without AT&T internet service, with outages beginning around 2:55 a.m. on Tuesday . While the cause of the outage has not been confirmed, the extreme cold may be a factor.
The West Chicago Police Department has shared helpful cold-weather tips on their social media channels, advising residents to dress in layers, check on neighbors and the elderly, and bring pets indoors.
Weather Update
The National Weather Service issued a cold weather advisory through Tuesday afternoon, warning of wind chills as low as 20 below zero. Although conditions improved slightly by Tuesday evening, residents faced another frigid morning on Wednesday.
Today (Wednesday), temperatures will reach a high of 26 degrees, providing some relief. However, light snow of up to an inch is possible, particularly in the evening. Temperatures are expected to continue rising toward the weekend, with highs of 24 degrees forecasted for both Thursday and Friday.
