FBI and Secret Service Involved in Ongoing Investigation
DuPage County officials have confirmed that a ransomware attack has crippled critical government systems, including the sheriff’s office, the 18th Judicial Circuit Court, and the Circuit Court Clerk’s office.
The attack, which was discovered early Monday morning around 2:30 a.m., has prompted a joint response from federal authorities, including the FBI and U.S. Secret Service. County officials took systems offline in an effort to contain the threat and are currently assessing the full extent of the damage.
“This afternoon, DuPage County confirmed it had been the target of a ransomware attack,” read a joint statement issued by Chief Judge Bonnie Wheaton, Circuit Court Clerk Candice Adams, and Sheriff Jim Mendrick, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
The full scope of the cyberattack remains unclear, but officials said that immediate steps were taken to identify and respond to the disruption. The statement also emphasized that efforts to restore services and investigate the source of the attack are ongoing.
According to a report from CBS News Chicago, county officials were first alerted to the “cyber incident” in the early hours of Monday. The county’s IT department and external cybersecurity experts are currently working to recover affected systems and ensure the integrity of court and law enforcement operations.
