Library to Host “History of Motown Records” Event June 19

Sharing is Caring, WeGo!

WEST CHICAGO — Music lovers are in for a soulful summer evening as the West Chicago Public Library District (WCPLD) welcomes acclaimed music historian and lecturer Gary Wenstrup for a dynamic presentation on the History of Motown Records. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the library.

Wenstrup, known for his engaging and insightful music lectures, will guide attendees on a nostalgic trip through Motown’s golden years, highlighting the label’s transformative impact on American music and culture. Through a blend of storytelling, visuals, and audio clips, guests will relive the iconic sounds of Motown’s biggest stars — from The Supremes and The Temptations to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and the Jackson 5.

Motown Records, founded in Detroit in the 1960s, earned the nickname “The Sound of Young America” and produced chart-topping hits with the same precision and popularity as Detroit’s famed auto industry. The presentation will explore the evolution of Motown’s sound — from the electrifying energy of “Dancing in the Streets” to the soul-searching depth of “What’s Going On.”

Gary Wenstrup, a retired advertising executive turned college lecturer, has presented to over 200 libraries across the country. His Beatles program was recognized as “The Best of the Best” by the Library Administrators Conference of Northern Illinois (LACONI). His deep passion for music history, combined with a conversational style, makes his programs a hit with audiences of all ages.

Seating is limited for this special event, and registration is required. Interested attendees are encouraged to sign up early to secure a spot.
