Accused is currently on parole for aggravated battery with a firearm out of Cook County
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and West Chicago Chief of Police Colin Fleury announced that Judge Leah Bendik has granted the State’s Moton to deny pre-trial release for a West Chicago man with multiple felony convictions who was allegedly found to be in possession of a loaded handgun. Ryan Ratliff, 35 (d.o.b. 12/13/1989) of the 100 block of Ainsley Drive, appeared in First Appearance Court yesterday morning charged with one count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Repeat Felony Offender (Class X Felony), one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon (Class 2 Felony), one count of Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Class 2 Felony) and multiple Misdemeanor counts including two counts of Aggravated Assault.
On June 28, 2025, at approximately 8:40 p.m., West Chicago police officers on active patrol responded to a call of a man with a gun on Arbor Street. Following an investigation into the call, it is alleged that the complaining witnesses were driving on Arbor Street when an individual, later identified as Ratcliff, jumped into the road from a grassy area, approached their car and pointed a handgun at them. The victims fled the area and called the police. While en route, officers observed an individual fitting the description of the defendant in the parking lot of a liquor store located at Arbor Street and Washington Street. Officers stopped to speak with the individual, later identified as Ratcliff, and after searching him did not find a weapon. After learning that Ratliff had entered the liquor store, officers searched the store and located a loaded handgun with twenty rounds in the magazine behind some bottles on a shelf in the store. It is alleged that Ratliff entered the liquor store, hid the gun behind the bottles toward the back of the shelf, and then left the store where he was met by the officers. Ratliff was taken into custody at this time. Further investigation found that the weapon was reported stolen out of Chicago on June 11, 2025.
“It is alleged that Mr. Ratliff, a man currently on parole with multiple felony convictions, was illegally in possession of a loaded handgun,” Berlin said. “The thought of an individual with a violent background such as Mr. Ratliff’s, allegedly in possession of a loaded handgun in public, is extremely disturbing. By law, as a convicted felon Mr. Ratliff has forfeited his right to ever possess a firearm. Because of his alleged actions Mr. Ratliff now finds himself facing a possible penalty of between six to thirty years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. I thank the West Chicago Police Department for their outstanding heads-up work that led to the removal of an illegally possessed weapon from our streets and their ongoing efforts in keeping our neighborhoods safe. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Michael Pingaj and Kristin Sullivan for their efforts in preparing a strong case against Mr. Ratliff.”
“Our officers did an excellent job investigating this incident, successfully removing a dangerous individual and an illegally owned handgun from our streets, likely preventing another tragedy,” Fleury said. “I thank State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his team for their legal guidance on this case and for their continued support of law enforcement.”
Ratliff’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 28, 2025, in front of Judge Margaret O’Connell.

El 28 de junio de 2025, aproximadamente a las 8:40 p.m., oficiales de policía de West Chicago que patrullaban activamente respondieron a un llamado que reportaba a un hombre armado en la calle Arbor. Según la investigación, se alega que los testigos conducían por la calle Arbor cuando un individuo, identificado posteriormente como Ratliff, saltó a la calle desde una zona de pasto, se acercó a su vehículo y les apuntó con un arma de fuego. Por ley, como delincuente convicto, el Sr. Ratliff ha perdido su derecho a poseer armas de fuego. Por sus acciones, ahora enfrenta una posible condena de entre seis y treinta años en el Departamento Correccional de Illinois. Agradezco al Departamento de Policía de West Chicago por su excelente trabajo, que permitió retirar un arma ilegal de nuestras calles, y por sus constantes esfuerzos para mantener seguras nuestras comunidades. También agradezco a los fiscales asistentes Michael Pingaj y Kristin Sullivan por su labor en la preparación de un caso sólido contra el Sr. Ratliff.”
