Tonight in downtown West Chicago, the streets of Main Street and Galena came alive with the sound of drums, chants, music, and waving flags as hundreds gathered for an impromptu march that was both a Mexican Independence Day celebration and a protest against recent ICE activity in the community.
The crowd, estimated at around 200 people, began gathering near the Republic Bank at Main and Washington before organically moving through the heart of downtown. Participants carried both Mexican and American flags high above their heads, while others held handmade signs with messages like “No Human is Illegal,” “Together We Are Home,” and “Immigrants Make America Great.” Some expressed anger at ICE directly, while others focused on unity, cultural pride, and resilience.
Illinois State Senator Karina Villa (D-West Chicago) joined the march and addressed the crowd at the beginning of the event, offering words of encouragement and solidarity at a time when fear and uncertainty have rippled through the community. Mayor Daniel Bovey was also spotted at the march, recording video, though he did not appear to address the crowd.
From there, the group marched together over the bridge, circled near West Chicago Community High School, and returned downtown, filling the streets with chants, songs, and flag-waving. A West Chicago Voice photography stringer who covered the event described it as having a “it was a lot of fun and great energy.”
This gathering came just days after reports confirmed that 15 people in West Chicago were detained by ICE agents, many while simply going about their daily lives. The incidents left families shaken, schools on lockdown, and residents wondering what might come next. Rumors of further ICE presence in the coming days have only heightened concerns.
Despite the heavy emotions of the past week, tonight’s march was filled with both determination and celebration. The community sang, waved both Mexican and American flags, and marched shoulder to shoulder, showing that while they are fearful, they are also united. “We love our country, but we will not be silent about what is happening to our families and neighbors,” one participant said.
As the march wound its way through downtown under strings of papel picado swaying in the night breeze, it was clear this was more than just a protest or a holiday celebration—it was a moment of strength, resilience, and love for both heritage and community.
