A national testing of the emergency broadcast system will take place OCTOBER 4. The national test is necessary to ensure that the national alert system is still effective in warning Americans about emergencies, natural disasters, attacks, and accidents at the national level. It allows federal emergency management coordinators to assess any potential issues or weaknesses in the system and make improvements if needed.
During the test, cellphones will receive a text message that may be similar to, “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” For cellphones with the main menu set to Spanish, the message will be in Spanish, stating, “ESTA ES UNA PRUEBA del Sistema Nacional de Alerta de Emergencia. No se necesita acción.”
The test is expected to last approximately one minute and will only occur once without any repeats.
The first national emergency broadcasting system in the U.S. was established in 1951 during the Cold War to warn the nation of potential enemy attacks. Over time, it has been refined and expanded, especially in response to growing concerns about nuclear attacks in the 1950s and 60s.
The most recent version of the Emergency Alert System underwent its first nationwide test on November 9, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. ET. This test revealed multiple problems with the system that could have resulted in some individuals not receiving the alert during a real emergency. As a result, the system was improved and strengthened to address these issues.
