The Wildcat Chronicle, West Chicago Community High School’s student publication clinched a coveted
National win and three distinguished individual awards at the recent Journalism Education Association (JEA) National High School Journalism Convention in Kansas City, showcasing excellence in journalism.
The highlight of the event was the Chronicle’s achievement in securing the prestigious Pacemaker award from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). This esteemed accolade recognizes top-tier student media outlets across various mediums including online, print, yearbook, and magazine. The Chronicle and strategic initiatives, including daily content updates, the integration of a dedicated multimedia section, and innovative features like and WEGO on Instagram and the Athlete of the Week spotlight, propelled the newspaper to stand out among the nation’s leading online student publications.
Amidst stiff competition, the Chronicle emerged as a finalist two months prior, marking it as just three schools in Illinois’ to earn this prestigious distinction.
The award ceremony at the JEA National High School Journalism Convention showcased twelve nationwide Pacemaker winners in the online category, the Wildcat Chronicle being one, a historic milestone in the paper’s legacy.
“It is an honor to be a part of the best student newspaper website in the entire nation. None of this would have been possible without the contributions of our wonderful staff, every single one of whom dedicated countless hours towards ensuring that the Pacemaker award is something we can call ours,” -Managing Editor Dhanveer Gill, a senior at West Chicago Community High School, said.
The conference also witnessed individual talents shining on the national stage, with students competing in various categories such as writing and multimedia. Senior Brandon Heath showcased his expertise in video package editing, while Managing Editor Karidja Monjolo’s stellar performance in broadcast anchoring earned her an Excellent distinction,
“I’ve never competed in a broadcast competition but I definitely think throughout the year, I’ve had
practice in that area with WEGO but still I walked in there not knowing what to expect. Overall, I felt
confident in my performance, but when they called my name for excellent, I was surprised and extremely proud of myself, and the work I had done”, Monjolo said.
The Chronicle’s talent extended to photography, with seniors Emily Ziajor and Sebastian Alarcon showcasing their skills in sports photography, and Editor-in-Chief Sasha Baumgartner doing the same in the photo storytelling category. Ziajor and Baumgartner received honorable mentions for their work.

Lo más destacado del evento fue el logro del Chronicle al obtener el prestigioso premio Pacemaker de la National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). Este estimado galardón reconoce a los medios de comunicación estudiantiles de primer nivel en diversos medios, incluidos en línea, impresos, anuarios y revistas. La Crónica y las iniciativas estratégicas, que incluyen actualizaciones diarias de contenido, la integración de una sección multimedia dedicada y características innovadoras como WEGO en Instagram y el foco del Atleta de la Semana, impulsaron al periódico a destacarse entre las principales publicaciones estudiantiles en línea del país.
En medio de una dura competencia, el Chronicle surgió como finalista dos meses antes, lo que lo convierte en solo tres escuelas de Illinois en obtener esta prestigiosa distinción.
La ceremonia de premiación en la Convención Nacional de Periodismo de Escuelas Secundarias de JEA contó con doce ganadores de Pacemaker a nivel nacional en la categoría en línea, siendo uno de ellos el Wildcat Chronicle, un hito histórico en el legado del periódico.
“Es un honor ser parte del mejor sitio web de periódico estudiantil de todo el país. Nada de esto hubiera sido posible sin las contribuciones de nuestro maravilloso personal, cada uno de los cuales dedicó innumerables horas para garantizar que el premio Pacemaker sea algo que podemos llamar nuestro”, dijo el editor en jefe Dhanveer Gill, estudiante de último año de West Chicago Community High School.
La conferencia también fue testigo de talentos individuales brillando en el escenario nacional, con estudiantes compitiendo en varias categorías como escritura y multimedia. Brandon Heath, senior, mostró su experiencia en la edición de paquetes de vídeo, mientras que la actuación estelar de la editora en jefe Karidja Monjolo como presentadora de transmisiones le valió una distinción excelente.
“Nunca he competido en una competencia de transmisión, pero definitivamente creo que a lo largo del año he tenido
Practiqué en esa área con WEGO pero aun así entré allí sin saber qué esperar. En general, me sentí
confiado en mi desempeño, pero cuando me tildaron de excelente, quedé sorprendido y muy orgulloso de mí mismo y del trabajo que había hecho”, dijo Monjolo.
El talento del Chronicle se extendió a la fotografía, con los estudiantes de último año Emily Ziajor y Sebastián Alarcón mostrando sus habilidades en fotografía deportiva, y la editora en jefe Sasha Baumgartner haciendo lo mismo en la categoría de narración fotográfica. Ziajor y Baumgartner recibieron menciones honoríficas por su trabajo.
