Rudolph LeRoy Huszagh, known affectionately as Lee, peacefully passed away at home in Wheaton on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the age of 94. Born in Chicago on September 13, 1929, to Rudolph and Dorothea Huszagh, Lee’s life was a vibrant tapestry of achievements and meaningful connections.
A big influence on Lee’s life came from his early years growing up as one of six siblings on a farm near Barrington, Illinois, raising animals and working the fields with plow horses before the family eventually acquired a tractor. Lee never forgot those strong roots and loved gathering at the farm for many years with members of his extended family. All six children eventually embarked on successful careers in law—a testament to the family’s work ethic, dedication, and intellect. Lee was a proud alumnus of Ela Vernon (Barrington) High School and Princeton University, where he earned a degree in economics. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, Lee obtained a JD from the University of Chicago and established himself as a distinguished lawyer.
Settling in Wheaton after a period in Wilmette, Lee founded his thriving legal practice, which he kept up until his mid-80s. However, Lee’s legacy extends far beyond his professional endeavors. He is especially remembered for his incredible energy and often-boisterous and warm-hearted manner.
A pillar in the Wheaton community, Lee dedicated his time to mentorship at Wheaton Youth Outreach, active involvement at Hope Presbyterian Church, People’s Resource Center, and membership in the Morton Arboretum. A nature enthusiast, Lee’s passions ranged from birdwatching to exploring the great outdoors, particularly relishing camping in the Boundary Waters, fishing, and pheasant hunting with friends and family. An advocate for youth development, he also engaged as a Boy Scout leader, showcasing his multifaceted interests and commitments. Lee’s enthusiasm and unique sense of humor made him a cherished companion and endeared him to all who knew him.
An active and devoted father and stepfather, Lee leaves behind a loving family: his wife of 42 years, Merikay Wiley Bryan Huszagh; his children from his first marriage, Andrew (Janet) McClurg, Virginia (Ernest Blake) Huszagh, Richard (Christine) Huszagh, and Catherine (Neil) Scott-Sills; his stepchildren Megan (Tarick) Loutfi and Marc (Sarah) Bryan; his eight grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Alexander and Matthew Huszagh, Francesca and Nathaniel Scott-Sills, Rhiannon and Dylan Loutfi, and Nicholas and Nathan Bryan, and many nieces and nephews. Lee is also survived by his brothers Frederick (Sandra) Huszagh and Ralph Huszagh, while being preceded in death by his parents, his sister Diane D’Amico, and brothers Theodore and Richard Huszagh.
In honoring Lee’s memory, memorials may be directed to Hope Presbyterian Church in Wheaton, symbolizing his enduring impact on both his community and loved ones. Rudolph LeRoy Huszagh’s legacy of kindness, dedication, and zest for life will forever resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service will be officiated by Rev. Kyle Roggenbuck on August 1st at 11:00 a.m. at Hope Presbyterian Church 1771 South Wiesbrook Road Wheaton IL, 60189.
