A fire broke out at Stockholm’s Restaurant and Brewery in downtown Geneva on the night of July 31, forcing the beloved establishment to temporarily close its doors. The fire, which originated in the basement kitchen, quickly spread to the bathroom, causing significant damage.
Firefighters from Geneva, along with assistance from the St. Charles and Batavia fire departments, responded to the scene at 306 W. State St. at 9:59 p.m. As crews made their way to the location, additional reports came in of smoke pouring from the second floor and the roof.
Despite the rapid response and containment of the blaze within 30 minutes, the restaurant suffered considerable fire, heat, smoke, and water damage. “As devastating as this is, it could have been far worse,” stated Michael Oleson, the owner of Stockholm’s, on Facebook. “What could have been a total loss was mitigated.”
In response to the incident, the staff launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of raising $25,000 to support the employees during the shutdown. The community’s generosity was overwhelming, and in just two days, the fund had raised enough to cover a week’s worth of wages and tips for the staff, amounting to approximately $19,000. By Wednesday, the donations had surpassed the initial goal, reaching nearly $37,000.
