WEST CHICAGO, IL — After a distinguished career spanning nearly 40 years in fire service, Chief Patrick Tanner of the West Chicago Fire Protection District will officially retire on January 10, 2025. The community is invited to honor his dedication and leadership at a retirement ceremony scheduled for 3 p.m. at Fire Station 6, located at 200 Fremont St.
The ceremony will also mark a new chapter for the district as Deputy Chief Jeffery Keefe is sworn in as the next fire chief. Keefe, 45, has served with the West Chicago Fire Protection District since June 2002 and brings more than two decades of experience to his new role.
Chief Tanner, 59, began his firefighting career on the North Shore, joining Highland Park’s municipal fire department as a full-time firefighter in 1985 after passing his first test at just 19 years old. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, serving as a paramedic, lieutenant, deputy chief, and eventually becoming Highland Park’s fire chief in 2010. In December 2014, he assumed the role of fire chief in West Chicago, where he has led the department for the past decade.
Reflecting on his career, Tanner said he has always appreciated the dynamic nature of fire service. “It’s never the same thing every day of the week, it’s always different, and I’ve always enjoyed that,” he said. However, his greatest satisfaction has come from helping others.
“Mainly, it’s helping people, and that’s where I get my satisfaction—knowing that I’m helping somebody in some way on what’s probably one of the worst days of their life. My department and I are making a difference in their life that day. You never take it for granted,” Tanner recently told The Daily Herald.
Tanner, who has resided in St. Charles since taking the West Chicago Fire Chief position, leaves behind a legacy of compassion and leadership. The community is encouraged to attend the retirement ceremony to celebrate his career and welcome Chief Keefe as he steps into his new role.

La comunidad está invitada a honrar su dedicación y liderazgo en una ceremonia de jubilación programada para las 3 p. m. en la Estación de Bomberos 6, ubicada en 200 Fremont St.
La ceremonia también marcará un nuevo capítulo para el distrito, ya que el subjefe Jeffery Keefe prestará juramento como el próximo jefe de bomberos. Keefe, de 45 años, ha trabajado en el Distrito de Protección contra Incendios de West Chicago desde junio de 2002 y aporta más de dos décadas de experiencia a su nuevo cargo.
El jefe Tanner, de 59 años, comenzó su carrera como bombero en North Shore, uniéndose al departamento de bomberos municipal de Highland Park como bombero a tiempo completo en 1985 después de aprobar su primer examen con solo 19 años.
