1. What inspired you to run for Winfield Township office, and what specific qualifications or experiences do you bring to the role?
I am a 41 year high school teaching veteran. Currently the chair of the WSR legislative committee and co-chair of the IEA retired legislative committee. I am running for the Winfield Township Clerk position because there is a need in our community that can be filled. If we file a 501c3, then grants could be written and used for a senior center, youth programs and a food pantry in our township. I have worked on grants, written coursework and presented it to the board, advocated for the repeal of WEP/GPO, written legislative and Teachers Retirement System reports and feel that my experience, attention to detail and work ethic would assist in these endeavors. I love my community and would like to see more services available.
2. What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Winfield Township, and what are your top priorities if elected?
The township functions to do three things,maintain the roads, assess the properties, and take care of the indigent. My position as clerk would be to keep the minutes and records of meetings, votes and legal paperwork. Additionally, because there are food insecure constituents, I would lobby to raise funds through grants to partner with or subsidize the food pantry that is located directly west of the township building. Another huge issue is housing and resources in our community. Through the general assistance, Liheap, the benevolent pastor’s fund, St. Mike’s open closet and the food pantry, we can assist with some needs. The more grants we can get written, the more we can help.
3. How do you plan to ensure transparency, accountability, and community engagement in township government?
For almost the last two years, I have been recording and posting the township open meetings on YouTube because I believe in a transparent relationship with the community. This practice would certainly continue. In addition, the agenda, which is mandated to be posted 48 hours prior to meetings, will be posted earlier so that the trustees may do their due diligence on the issues to be discussed and the community can decide if they would like to attend the meeting. All communications will also be posted in Spanish. Townships Of Illinois has a “Code of Civility” that they encourage all township boards to sign. I long for a please and thank you world, will listen to everyone’s input equally and suggest that we all sign the code of civility. My door will be open and I am always happy to listen to you.
4. Township government plays a unique role in local services. What initiatives or improvements would you like to implement to better serve residents?
I believe that we can get a senior center with social activities, tax help and access to resources, a youth program for tutoring and social events, and a fully funded food pantry IN our township over the next four years. During this day and time we do not have the luxury of being ordinary, we need to be extraordinary. I believe to my core that our slate of candidates are extraordinary. It is my hope and expectation that we will get good things done for our constituents. I would like to mentor high school students who think that they may want to be public servants or clerks. If I intern mentored students, they may well become the next clerk. If I do my job correctly, the next clerk will be more reflective of the community they serve.

Soy una veterana docente de secundaria con 41 años de experiencia. Actualmente presido el comité legislativo de WSR y copresidente del comité legislativo jubilado de IEA. Me postulo para el puesto de Secretaria del Municipio de Winfield porque existe una necesidad en nuestra comunidad que puede cubrirse. Si presentamos una solicitud 501c3, se podrían solicitar subvenciones para un centro para personas mayores, programas juveniles y un banco de alimentos en nuestro municipio. He trabajado en subvenciones, he redactado cursos y los he presentado a la junta, he abogado por la derogación de WEP/GPO, he redactado informes legislativos y del Sistema de Jubilación de Maestros, y creo que mi experiencia, atención al detalle y ética laboral contribuirían a estos esfuerzos. Amo a mi comunidad y me gustaría ver más servicios disponibles.
2. ¿Cuáles considera que son los problemas más urgentes que enfrenta el municipio de Winfield y cuáles son sus principales prioridades si es elegida?
El municipio tiene tres funciones: mantener las carreteras, tasar las propiedades y atender a los indigentes. Mi puesto como secretario sería llevar las actas y los registros de las reuniones, las votaciones y los trámites legales. Además, dado que hay electores con inseguridad alimentaria, cabildearía para recaudar fondos mediante subvenciones para colaborar o subsidiar la despensa de alimentos ubicada justo al oeste del edificio del municipio. Otro gran problema es la vivienda y los recursos en nuestra comunidad. A través de la asistencia general, Liheap, el fondo del pastor benévolo, el armario abierto de St. Mike y la despensa de alimentos, podemos ayudar con algunas necesidades. Cuantas más subvenciones logremos, más podremos ayudar.
3. ¿Cómo planean garantizar la transparencia, la rendición de cuentas y la participación comunitaria en el gobierno del municipio?
Durante casi los últimos dos años, he estado grabando y publicando las reuniones abiertas del municipio en YouTube porque creo en una relación transparente con la comunidad. Esta práctica seguramente continuará. Además, la agenda, que debe publicarse 48 horas antes de las reuniones, se publicará con mayor antelación para que los administradores puedan investigar los temas a tratar y la comunidad pueda decidir si desea asistir a la reunión. Todas las comunicaciones se publicarán en español. Los Municipios de Illinois tienen un “Código de Civismo” que animan a todas las juntas municipales a firmar. Espero un mundo de “por favor” y “gracias”, escucharé las opiniones de todos por igual y sugiero que todos firmemos el código de civismo. Mi puerta estará abierta y siempre estaré encantado de escucharlos.
4. El gobierno municipal desempeña un papel único en los servicios locales. ¿Qué iniciativas o mejoras le gustaría implementar para servir mejor a los residentes?
Creo que podemos conseguir un centro para personas mayores con actividades sociales, ayuda con los impuestos y acceso a recursos, un programa juvenil de tutoría y eventos sociales, y una despensa de alimentos totalmente financiada en nuestro municipio durante los próximos cuatro años. Hoy en día, no podemos darnos el lujo de ser ordinarios; necesitamos ser extraordinarios. Creo firmemente que nuestra lista de candidatos es extraordinaria. Espero y espero que logremos cosas buenas para nuestros electores. Me gustaría ser mentor de estudiantes de preparatoria que deseen ser servidores públicos o administrativos. Si hago prácticas como mentor de estudiantes, es muy probable que se conviertan en el próximo administrativo. Si hago bien mi trabajo, el próximo administrativo reflejará mejor a la comunidad a la que sirve.
