DUPAGE COUNTY, IL — DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick issued a pointed statement on social media Wednesday, criticizing Illinois Governor JB Pritzker for what he described as “inciting statements” made shortly before a large-scale cyberattack targeted the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.
In the post, Sheriff Mendrick expressed concern over remarks made by Governor Pritzker in which the governor stated, “Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now.” Mendrick, who is also a Republican gubernatorial candidate, called the statement “hateful rhetoric” and claimed it coincided closely with a significant breach of his department’s communications and computer systems.
“Just a few hours after JB Pritzker made these inciting statements, the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office was the target of a large-scale cyberattack that took phones and many computer systems down,” Mendrick wrote. “They attempted to take over all of our technology. This is the first time this has ever happened at our Sheriff’s Office.”
While Mendrick acknowledged that the timing could be a coincidence, he emphasized that elected leaders should be held accountable for their words and the consequences they may inspire. “When irresponsible politicians call for disruptive behavior, and then bad things happen, they should be held accountable,” he wrote.
Sheriff Mendrick urged the governor to “stop inciting the citizens to be disruptive,” adding that “this type of behavior by elected officials has to stop.”
Governor Pritzker made his remarks earlier this week in response to rising political tensions and growing partisan divides across Illinois and the nation. The quote cited by Mendrick has circulated widely online and has drawn both support and criticism depending on political affiliation.
As of press time, no evidence directly links the governor’s statements to the cyberattack, and state officials have not issued a comment in response to Mendrick’s claims.
