WEST CHICAGO, Ill. – A Bloomingdale man is facing a slew of felony charges after allegedly attempting to rob a West Chicago gas station at gunpoint in the early morning hours of May 27. Authorities say the situation could have turned deadly, if not for sheer luck—and the presence of a West Chicago police officer inside the store at the time.
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, 43-year-old Filip Simonovic entered the Thornton’s gas station at 1330 S. Neltnor Boulevard around 1:25 a.m., wearing body armor and armed with multiple loaded firearms. A West Chicago officer, who had just walked in to purchase drinks, witnessed the unfolding incident.
Investigators say Simonovic walked up to the counter to buy cigarettes. When the clerk began to ring up the items, Simonovic allegedly pulled out a black handgun, racked it, and said, “Don’t do anything stupid,” before demanding money from two cash registers. Moments later, he reportedly pulled a second loaded firearm from his waistband and aimed it at the victim.
Simonovic was arrested at the scene and taken into custody. A breathalyzer test showed his blood alcohol concentration was .147—nearly twice the legal limit.
Officers recovered two loaded handguns on Simonovic at the time of arrest: a Beretta Mod 950BS .25 caliber and a Beretta Mod 92FS 9mm. Additional loaded firearms were found in his vehicle, including a Ruger .357 magnum revolver, a Zastava M92 carbine, and a Smith & Wesson SW9VE 9mm. Police also discovered open alcohol containers in the car.
Simonovic now faces the following charges:
- One count of attempted armed robbery with a firearm
- One count of unlawful possession of a weapon
- Three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon
- Two counts of misdemeanor DUI
- One count of misdemeanor transportation of open alcohol by a driver
Judge Joshua Dieden granted a motion to detain Simonovic pre-trial. His next court date is scheduled for June 23.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin condemned the incident, saying, “As a society, we must never tolerate or become numb to armed violence… This type of behavior will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force of the law.”
West Chicago Police Chief Colin Fleury emphasized the danger officers face, noting, “The offender’s use of a bulletproof vest, along with two handguns, more firearms in the vehicle, and a cache of ammunition, serves as a stark reminder that the line between life and death can often come down to sheer luck.”

WEST CHICAGO, Illinois – Un hombre de Bloomingdale enfrenta múltiples cargos por delitos graves tras intentar, presuntamente, robar a mano armada una gasolinera de West Chicago durante la madrugada del 27 de mayo. Las autoridades señalan que la situación pudo haber terminado en tragedia, de no ser por la presencia de un oficial de policía de West Chicago que se encontraba dentro del establecimiento.
Según la Oficina del Fiscal del Estado del Condado de DuPage, Filip Simonovic, de 43 años, entró a la gasolinera Thornton’s ubicada en el 1330 S. Neltnor Boulevard aproximadamente a la 1:25 a.m., portando un chaleco antibalas y varias armas de fuego cargadas. Un oficial de policía que había ingresado minutos antes para comprar bebidas presenció el incidente.
Los investigadores informan que Simonovic se acercó al mostrador para comprar cigarrillos. Cuando el empleado comenzó a cobrarlos, Simonovic presuntamente sacó una pistola negra, la amartilló y le dijo: “No hagas nada estúpido”, exigiendo el dinero de dos cajas registradoras. El juez Joshua Dieden aprobó la moción para mantener a Simonovic detenido antes del juicio. Su próxima comparecencia ante el tribunal está programada para el 23 de junio.
