West Chicago Celebrates Rich Lo Mural Unveiling at Gallery 200
WEST CHICAGO — A crowd of about 55 community members gathered at Gallery 200 on Friday, June 13, to celebrate the unveiling of a new mural by artist Rich Lo as part of the Waves of DuPage: Beautiful Cities Public Art Project. The event brought together educators, artists, city leaders, and residents in a vibrant showcase of cultural expression, public art, and community pride.
The mural, now featured in the front window of Gallery 200 at 103 W. Washington Street, depicts West Chicago Community High School in the style of traditional Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock art. The piece pays tribute to the high school’s rich legacy as it approaches its centennial celebration in 2026.
Among those in attendance were Dr. Limaris Pueyo, the new principal of West Chicago Community High School, and District 94 Superintendent Dr. Kurt Johansen. Both participated in honoring the artist, presenting him with a thoughtful WCCHS-branded gift bag as a token of appreciation. Members of the West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission, several Gallery 200 artists featured in the accompanying Japanese-themed exhibit, and representatives from the West Chicago Public Library District — including Director Benjamin Weseloh and Assistant Director Amanda Ghobrial — were also present.
Mandy Rakow, West Chicago resident and Education and Community Engagement Coordinator at the McAninch Arts Center (MAC), attended the event along with MAC Director Diana Martinez. The MAC has played a key role in supporting the Waves of DuPage project, which serves as a community-driven companion effort to the upcoming 2025 Cleve Carney Museum of Art exhibit Hokusai and Ukiyo-e: The Floating World. Through murals and local partnerships, the initiative extends the spirit of that exhibit into neighborhoods across DuPage County.
Guests enjoyed light refreshments and remarks from key collaborators while exploring the mural and exhibit, which celebrates both West Chicago’s local identity and its global cultural connections. This installation marks the third mural in the Waves of DuPage series and underscores the power of public art to bring people together across generations and backgrounds.

WEST CHICAGO — Una multitud de aproximadamente 55 miembros de la comunidad se reunió en Gallery 200 el viernes 13 de junio para celebrar la inauguración de un nuevo mural del artista Rich Lo, como parte del proyecto Waves of DuPage: Beautiful Cities Public Art Project. El evento reunió a educadores, artistas, líderes locales y residentes en una vibrante muestra de expresión cultural, arte público y orgullo comunitario.
El mural, que ahora se exhibe en la ventana principal de Gallery 200 en el 103 W. Washington Street, representa a West Chicago Community High School en el estilo tradicional japonés de grabado en madera conocido como ukiyo-e. La obra rinde homenaje al legado de la escuela secundaria mientras se aproxima a su centenario en 2026.
