Downtown West Chicago is about to come alive with music, dance, food, and community spirit as the city prepares to host its annual Mexican Independence Day Festival on Sunday, September 14, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The free family-friendly celebration promises a full afternoon of culture, heritage, and hometown pride.
The festival kicks off with an Opening Ceremony and the traditional Grito de Independencia (Cry of Independence), setting the tone for a day filled with unity and cultural pride. One of the most anticipated highlights of the afternoon will be the towering 13-foot piñata—guaranteed to delight both kids and adults when it bursts open with candy.
Festival-goers can enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine, live Mariachi music, and performances from Ballet Folklorico dancers. The stage will also feature a special concert by El Retorno Musical, capped off by an energetic set from Spanish rock band Los Corb.
This year’s event is made possible through a true community effort. The City of West Chicago is sponsoring the festival alongside Despertar Latino, with strong partnerships from the Mexican Cultural Center of DuPage, WeGo Together for Kids, and Casa Michoacan DuPage. Additional support comes from West Chicago School Districts 33 and 94, the West Chicago City Museum, and People Made Visible.
Parking & Road Closures
Visitors should plan ahead, as downtown road closures will be in effect. Galena Street (between Main St. and High St.) and Main Street (between Center St. and Washington St.) will be closed from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 14. Vehicles left on closed streets after 5:00 a.m. will be towed at the owner’s expense.
Turner Court will remain open but with reversed traffic flow during festival hours. Free public parking is available at several downtown lots, including Gallery 200 (103 W. Washington St.), the Fremont Street lot, Turner Court lot, Republic Bank lot at 101 Main St., the Western DuPage Chamber lot at 306 Main St., and the Metra lot at 508 Main St.

West Chicago se prepara para la celebración del Día de la Independencia de México
El centro de West Chicago se llenará de música, danza, comida y espíritu comunitario cuando la ciudad celebre su Festival Anual del Día de la Independencia de México el domingo 14 de septiembre, de 12:00 p.m. a 6:00 p.m. Este evento gratuito y familiar promete una tarde completa de cultura, herencia y orgullo local.
El festival comenzará con una Ceremonia de Apertura y el tradicional Grito de Independencia, que marcará el tono para un día lleno de unidad y orgullo cultural. Uno de los momentos más esperados de la tarde será la gigantesca piñata de 13 pies, que sin duda hará sonreír a chicos y grandes cuando se rompa y libere dulces.
Los asistentes podrán disfrutar de auténtica comida mexicana, música en vivo de mariachis y presentaciones de Ballet Folklórico. El escenario también contará con un concierto especial de El Retorno Musical y cerrará con la energía contagiosa de la banda de rock en español Los Corb.
Este evento es posible gracias a un verdadero esfuerzo comunitario. La Ciudad de West Chicago patrocina el festival junto con Despertar Latino, con el apoyo del Centro Cultural Mexicano de DuPage, WeGo Together for Kids y Casa Michoacán DuPage. También colaboran los Distritos Escolares 33 y 94 de West Chicago, el Museo de la Ciudad y People Made Visible.
Estacionamiento y cierres de calles
Se recomienda a los visitantes planear con anticipación, ya que habrá cierres en el centro de la ciudad. La calle Galena (entre Main St. y High St.) y la calle Main (entre Center St. y Washington St.) estarán cerradas desde las 5:00 a.m. hasta las 10:00 p.m. del domingo 14 de septiembre. Los vehículos que permanezcan en estas calles después de las 5:00 a.m. serán remolcados a costo del propietario.
Turner Court permanecerá abierto, pero con sentido de circulación invertido durante las horas del festival. Habrá estacionamiento público gratuito en varios lotes del centro, incluyendo Gallery 200 (103 W. Washington St.), el lote de Fremont Street, el lote de Turner Court, el estacionamiento del Republic Bank en 101 Main St., el lote de la Cámara de Comercio del Oeste de DuPage (306 Main St.), y el lote de Metra en 508 Main St.
