A man has been apprehended and taken into custody following allegations of his involvement in a hit-and-run incident that tragically resulted in the death of a motorcyclist in West Chicago. Identified as Jose Barrera Munoz, a resident of the 300 block of Church Street in West Chicago, the individual is now facing charges related to leaving the scene of an accident causing death and driving with a suspended license. The incident took place on Thursday, September 6th.

At approximately 7:15 p.m., authorities received a 911 call regarding a collision with injuries near Kings Circle and Neltnor Boulevard. Upon Responding law enforcement discovered an individual lying on the ground at the scene.

Subsequently, the injured man was swiftly transported to a nearby medical facility, where tragically, he was later pronounced deceased.

Prosecutors have presented details alleging that Barrera Munoz was traveling in a northerly direction on Neltnor when he made an ill-fated left turn, thereby intersecting the path of a motorcyclist who was heading south. Law enforcement accounts indicate that the motorcycle collided with the driver’s side of Barrera Munoz’s vehicle, leading to the ejection of the motorcyclist.

Barrera Munoz is accused of fleeing the scene on foot following the crash. He was taken into custody Friday morning and is being held in the DuPage County Jail on $500,000 bond.

“If you are involved in an accident, fatal or not, not stopping is not an option,” . DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

“The allegation that Mr. Barrera Munoz was involved in a crash that sent a man flying off his motorcycle and onto the ground and that instead of rendering aid, he fled on foot, leaving his car behind, are extremely upsetting,”  Berlin said in a statement.

Berlin said “Additionally, the actions alleged against Mr. Barrera Munoz are not only disgraceful, they are also illegal. I extend my sincerest condolences to the victim’s family and friends as they grieve this senseless, terrible loss.”

Barrera Munoz is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 2.
