Edward Dane “Eddie” Bruce, age 99 of West Chicago, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2023. Loving father of William (Karla) Bruce; proud grandfather of Logan (Taryn) Bruce and Lindsay Bruce; adored great-grandfather of McKinley Bruce; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Eddie was preceded in death by his wife Marion, (married nearly 47 years); his daughter, Beverly Keenan; parents, Herman and Carrie Bruce; and his siblings Everet (Helen), Wayne (Melita), Cecil (Agnes), JD (Josephine), Ray (Ruth Ann), Martin, and Lavina (Jack).
Eddie proudly and honorably served in the United States Air Force and World War II. He served as an aerial gunner flying in B24’s and B29’s handling machine guns. He was responsible for loading and maintaining weapons prior to flights as well as servicing aircraft. During his service, he was awarded the following medals; American Campaign, Good Conduct, and World War II Victory Medal. Eddie studied heavy line construction, trouble shooting, installation field telephones and switchboards during his time in the service. This led to his career after the United States Air Force.
He worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Company as an engineer – distribution services/facilities for 38 years and enjoyed getting together monthly for breakfast with his former coworkers and employees after his retirement. Eddie also enjoyed reminiscing about his Illinois Bell days drinking martinis at the Tally Ho.
Eddie was an avid golfer and attributed his good health and longevity due to walking the 9 holes while carrying his clubs, which he did well into his 90’s. He was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in West Chicago. More than anything, Eddie enjoyed spending time with his family. His most cherished memories were going out weekly for food and ice cream with his grandson, Logan. He looked forward to his standing Friday lunch date with his best buddy. Eddie was the best Papa to his grandkids, always attending their many sporting events, school plays/functions and spoiling them rotten!
A Visitation for Eddie will be held at DuPage Funeral Chapel (951 W. Washington Street, West Chicago) on Friday, November 10, 2023, from 9-11 AM with a Chapel Service beginning at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Glen Oak Cemetery in West Chicago. In lieu of flowers, donations in Eddie’s name may be made online to the National Foundation of Swallowing Disorders (in honor of his beautiful great granddaughter McKinley), or the Dementia Society of America (P.O. Eddie también disfrutó recordando sus días en Illinois Bell bebiendo martinis en el Tally Ho. Eddie era un ávido golfista y atribuyó su buena salud y longevidad a haber caminado los 9 hoyos mientras cargaba sus palos, lo que hizo hasta los 90 años. Fue miembro durante mucho tiempo de la Iglesia Luterana Trinity en West Chicago. Más que nada, Eddie disfrutaba pasar tiempo con su familia. Sus recuerdos más preciados eran salir semanalmente a comer y tomar un helado con su nieto, Logan. Esperaba con ansias su cita permanente para almorzar el viernes con su mejor amigo. Eddie era el mejor papá para sus nietos, siempre asistía a sus numerosos eventos deportivos, obras de teatro y funciones escolares y los malcriaba muchísimo. Se llevará a cabo un velorio para Eddie en DuPage Funeral Chapel (951 W. Washington Street, West Chicago) el viernes 10 de noviembre de 2023, de 9 a 11 a. m. con un servicio de capilla que comenzará a las 11 a. m. Seguirá el entierro en el cementerio Glen Oak en West Chicago.
