In a decisive victory, incumbent Democrat Delia Ramirez has been re-elected to represent Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. The Associated Press called the race for Ramirez shortly after polls closed Tuesday evening, with results showing strong support across the district.
With 64% of precincts reporting by 9:15 p.m., Ramirez led with 119,366 votes, capturing 64.1% of the total. Her Republican challenger, attorney and former police officer John Booras, received 66,783 votes, or 35.9%. Ramirez’s success aligns with her 2022 win, where she garnered over two-thirds of the vote against Republican Justin Burau.
Ramirez, the daughter of Guatemalan immigrants and a former state legislator, ran her campaign on the strength of her social services background and her work as a community organizer. Financially, Ramirez’s campaign raised nearly $988,000 by mid-October, a stark contrast to Booras’ $1,840, underscoring her significant advantage in the historically Democratic district, which includes Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, and other nearby suburbs.
Booras’ campaign focused on issues like expanding school voucher programs and increasing childcare tax deductions to better reflect modern costs, as outlined on his campaign website. He also voiced opposition to mandated sexuality education from pre-K through eighth grade, highlighting his stance on education reform.
With another landslide victory, Ramirez retains her seat, ready to continue her work representing the community’s diverse and growing needs.
