A serious two-vehicle accident on Monday evening, September 8, 2025, brought a large emergency response and temporarily shut down a stretch of Route 59 near Grandlake Boulevard in West Chicago.
According to Police Chief Colin Fleury, Vehicle 1 was traveling southbound on Route 59 when it crossed into northbound lanes and struck the front of a second vehicle. After the initial impact, Vehicle 1 left the roadway, went into a nearby yard, and collided with a utility pole.
Two people inside Vehicle 1 sustained what appeared to be minor injuries. The driver was transported to the hospital, and police believe the individual may have suffered a medical episode prior to the crash. That detail has not yet been officially confirmed.
The crash led to a temporary shutdown of Route 59 as first responders worked the scene. Multiple ambulances, police units, and fire department vehicles from both West Chicago and Winfield responded. Emergency medical technicians treated those involved, while crews secured the area and cleared the wreckage.
The shutdown caused significant traffic delays during the evening commute, with backups stretching down Route 59 past Main Street.
West Chicago Voice reporters responded to the scene and witnessed firsthand the destruction. One of the vehicles ended up down in a ditch near the houses along Route 59, with extensive damage visible. Firefighters and police worked into the evening to ensure the area was safe and traffic could reopen.
Despite the dramatic crash and heavy emergency response, no life-threatening injuries were reported.
